If you just want the fast setup:
- Add a compressor to your bass track (ReaComp)
- Open the plugin’s Detector Input settings
- Send your kick track → bass track (set send to channels 3/4)
- Set ReaComp to detect input from Auxiliary Input (L+R)
- Adjust:
- Ratio: 3:1–5:1
- Attack: fast (but not zero)
- Release: timed to groove
- Lower the threshold until the bass ducks slightly when the kick hits
👉 That’s it — your kick now has space to punch through.

How to Set Up Sidechain Compression in REAPER (Step-by-Step)
Step 1 — Add ReaComp to the Bass Track
- Insert ReaComp on your bass track
- This will control the bass level
Step 2 — Create the Sidechain Send
From your kick track:
- Click the routing button
- Add a send to the bass track
- Set the send to channels 3/4
👉 This keeps the sidechain signal separate from the main audio
💡 Important:
If channels 3/4 aren’t available, you’ll need to create them on the receiving track.
In the send window:
- Look for Audio: 1/2 → 1/2
- Click the second 1/2 (destination channels)
- Choose:
→ New channels to receiving track
→ then select 3/4
This tells REAPER to create additional channels so the sidechain signal can remain separate from the main audio.
Step 3 — Configure ReaComp
Inside ReaComp:
- Set Detector Input to:
→ Auxiliary Input (L+R) – This tells ReaComp to listen to channels 3/4 (your sidechain signal from the kick)
Now the compressor is reacting to the kick, not the bass itself.
Step 4 — Dial in the Compression
Start with:
- Ratio: 3:1–5:1
- Attack: fast (but not zero — allow a little transient)
- Release: adjust to match the groove
- Threshold: lower until you see gain reduction when the kick hits
