If there’s one thing that can make a mix feel like it’s arguing with you, it’s misreading the meters.
REAPER gives you Peak, RMS, and even LUFS metering — each one answering a different question.

Here’s how Peak, RMS, and LUFS work in REAPER — and how to use them to keep your mixes translating across everything from studio monitors to smartphones.


Peak Metering in REAPER: Your “Ceiling Alarm”

Peak meters show the instantaneous, highest amplitude moment of your signal. They answer a simple, non-negotiable question:

“Is anything about to clip?”

Why this matters:
Digital clipping is harsh, ugly, and irreversible. Keeping an eye on Peak means avoiding disasters before they happen.

When you depend on Peak

  • Vocal tracking
  • Drum hits and transients
  • Limiter behaviour
  • Mix bus headroom
  • Preventing clipping at export

Peak does not tell you how loud something sounds.
It tells you whether you’re about to cause heartbreak.

RMS Metering: How Loud It Feels

RMS (Root Mean Square) shows “average” loudness — closer to how our ears work.

RMS is where you judge:

  • Musical loudness
  • Track consistency
  • Compressor threshold points
  • Tonal and density balance

Real-world RMS behaviour

  • Vocals: RMS typically ~–18 to –14 dBFS
  • Drums: RMS way below peaks (big crest factor)
  • Densely compressed mix: RMS creeps closer to Peak

How REAPER Displays Peak, RMS, and LUFS

REAPER is flexible, and metering is no exception.

Mixer & Track Control Panel

Right-click any meter to choose:

  • Peak only
  • Peak + RMS
  • RMS bar
  • Pre-fader or post-fader
  • Meter appearance options

Master Meter

When wide enough, REAPER’s master meter shows Peak + RMS by default.

LUFS Options in REAPER

Three ways to access LUFS:

  1. JS: Loudness Meter (Cockos)
  2. REAPER 6.35+ Metering Updates

LUFS: Loudness for the Real World

Peak and RMS tell you what’s happening inside your DAW.
LUFS tells you what the listener hears over time — and what Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and others will do to your track.

All major platforms float around –14 LUFS-I. That doesn’t mean your songs have to be mastered to -14 LUFS (some tracks are as loud as -8 LUFS-I). It means the platform will normalise your song to whatever their LUFS level is. If you’re doing your own mastering, my advice is to ere on the side of being louder, rather than softer, as some platforms (such as YouTube) don’t normalise your tracks to be louder if they’re too quiet. If you’re having your songs mastered by someone else, ask them what levels they prefer for their workflow. The key is to find the balance between making your song as loud as you can while keeping the intended dynamics of the track.

LUFS types

  • LUFS-I (Integrated): whole track
  • LUFS-S (Short-Term): ~3 seconds
  • LUFS-M (Momentary): ~400 ms

LUFS is your best friend when mixes feel “fine inside REAPER” but fall apart after YouTube chews on them.


Peak vs RMS vs LUFS: Who Answers What?

Here’s the clear breakdown:

Peak → Safety

  • Avoid clipping
  • Check transients
  • Ensure your limiter isn’t panicking

RMS → Musical balance

  • Set compressor thresholds
  • Hit plugins at the right level
  • Assess mix thickness and tonal density

LUFS → Real-world loudness

  • Predict streaming behaviour
  • Ensure consistency across sections
  • Avoid “Spotify turned me down by 4 dB” heartbreak

A widely accepted priority (echoed by educators like Myk Robinson and Kenny Gioia):

When meters disagree: trust LUFS → RMS → Peak.

Practical REAPER Workflows (With Real Numbers & Educator Alignment)

These align with standard practices taught by Adam Steel, Kenny Gioia, Jon Tidey, and others.

1. Vocal Gain Staging

  1. Tracking Peaks:
    Aim for –12 to –6 dBFS.
    Kenny Gioia has a great video on setting recording levels in REAPER.
  2. RMS Check:
    Expect RMS around –18 to –14 dBFS.
  3. Compressor Threshold:
    Set threshold near your RMS value for musical behaviour.
  4. LUFS-M Check:
    Watch for over-dense choruses that spike LUFS short-term.

2. Drum Bus Workflow

  1. Peak Safety:
    Keep drum bus peaks below –6 dBFS.
  2. RMS Balancing:
    • Compare overhead RMS to shell RMS
    • Compare kick RMS to bass RMS (a classic mix trick)

  1. LUFS-S Check:
    If Short-Term LUFS barely moves, you’ve likely over-compressed.

3. Mix Bus Workflow

A safe baseline to aim for is as follows:

  • Peak: around –6 dBFS
  • RMS: around –18 to –12 dBFS
  • LUFS-I: around –18 to –14 before mastering

Floating-Point Reality Check (REAPER’s “Secret Headroom”)

Some mixing engineers say:
“You can hit +3 dB inside REAPER — the 64-bit float engine won’t clip.”

That’s technically true.

BUT:

  • Analog-modelled plugins can clip internally
  • Your audio interface will clip at 0 dBFS
  • Your exports will distort if you don’t pull back somewhere

So while REAPER is forgiving, the conservative approach taken across these REAPER Chat articles remains best practice.


Quick Cheat Sheet

Use Peak when:

  • Tracking
  • Managing transients
  • Preventing clipping
  • Watching limiter behaviour

Use RMS when:

  • Setting compressor thresholds
  • Matching loudness between tracks
  • Balancing kick & bass
  • Keeping plugins in analog “sweet spots” (~–18 dBFS RMS)

Use LUFS when:

  • Preparing mixes for YouTube/Spotify
  • Checking chorus loudness
  • Managing song-to-song consistency
