Now that your project is set up and you’ve imported your audio and MIDI files, it’s time to start recording! The ability to easily record with a click track is a foundational skill, but what do you do when the tempo isn’t already set? In this guide, we’ll explore two common scenarios: setting your project tempo to match an imported drum loop, and setting the loop to match a tempo you want to play.

Part 1: Conforming Your Project to an Imported Loop

This is the most common and straightforward method. If you have a pre-recorded drum loop or a sample with a known tempo, you can use it to set your entire project’s BPM. This ensures that any new instruments you record will be perfectly in time with your loop.

  1. Import Your Drum Loop: Drag your audio loop from your file explorer directly into a new track in REAPER. If your loop is a WAV or MP3 file, a new track will be created automatically.
  2. Find the Loop’s BPM: REAPER is excellent at detecting the tempo of audio. Right-click on the imported audio item and select Item settings > Set item tempo from beats. REAPER will analyze the file and display a pop-up with its calculated tempo. By allowing the software to analyze the file’s natural tempo, you ensure that the entire session is built on a solid, rhythmic foundation.
  3. Set the Project BPM: With your loop selected, go to the top of your REAPER window and click on the BPM value (e.g., “120 BPM”). In the dialog that appears, simply type in the BPM that REAPER detected from your loop. The project grid will now align perfectly with your audio file.
  4. Set Up the Metronome: To make recording easier, you’ll want to enable the metronome. Click the metronome icon in the toolbar (it looks like a small click track icon). You can right-click this icon to open the metronome settings and adjust the volume and sound.

Part 2: Conforming a Loop to Your Performance

What if you have a song in your head but you don’t know the tempo? This is where REAPER’s flexibility shines. You can use your own internal “groove” to set the project’s tempo, and then adjust the drum loop to match your performance.

  1. Use Tap Tempo: This is the easiest way to find your tempo. In the main toolbar, find the BPM value display. Next to it, there’s a small button that says “Tap”. As you’re listening to or playing the song in your head, click this button repeatedly on the beat of the music. REAPER will automatically calculate and set the project’s BPM based on your tapping.
  2. Prepare to Time-Stretch: Once you have a tempo you’re happy with, it’s time to stretch your imported drum loop to match. First, turn on “Snap” in the main toolbar. This ensures the loop will snap to your project’s grid.
  3. Time-Stretch the Loop: Select the drum loop audio item you want to stretch. While holding the Alt key (on Windows) or Cmd key (on Mac), click and drag the end of the item to snap it to a new location on the grid. REAPER will stretch or shrink the audio to fit the new length, conforming its tempo to your project’s BPM. For example, if your loop is 8 bars long, stretch it to make it exactly 8 bars in the new project BPM.
  4. Record Your Instrument: Now that your loop is stretched to your custom tempo, you can enable the metronome, hit the record button, and play along. The drum loop will stay perfectly in time with you.

An Expert Tip: The Importance of Transients

As you work with audio files, you’ll hear the term “transient” used frequently. A transient is the initial, high-energy peak of a sound, such as the initial “thwack” of a drum stick on a snare drum or the first sound of a pick hitting a guitar string.

When you’re trying to align a loop to a grid or even when the software is trying to determine a loop’s BPM, it’s looking for these transients. Being able to visually identify transients on the audio waveform is a core skill for any producer or engineer. It allows you to quickly spot where the main hits or beats are, making it easier to manually align audio to the grid if needed.

REAPER’s ability to handle both of these situations with ease is one of its most powerful features. Whether you prefer to build your song around a pre-existing loop or set the groove yourself, REAPER adapts to your creative process, not the other way around. This flexibility is a game-changer for home studio musicians.
