Gain Staging in the DAW

The simple discipline that makes every plug-in sound better


Introduction

Gain staging might not sound glamorous, but it’s one of the most important foundations of a clean, professional mix. Every time you record, process, or route a signal inside your DAW, you’re shaping its level — and that level determines how your plug-ins react. Get it right, and your mix breathes with clarity. Get it wrong, and you’re fighting distortion, dullness, or lifeless tone before you even touch an EQ.

Here’s the thing: in the analog world, 0 VU on a meter roughly equals −18 dBFS in digital audio. That’s the sweet spot where analog gear—and most analog-modelled plug-ins—are designed to sound their best. Too hot, and you’ll hit saturation or distortion. Too cold, and your mix will lose warmth and energy.

Understanding the Modern Gain Stage

Back in the analog days, engineers used 0 VU as the reference level for optimal performance, leaving around 18 dB of headroom before clipping. In digital systems, 0 dBFS is the absolute ceiling — once you hit it, the waveform clips. To mimic the analog headroom experience, most DAWs and plug-in developers align 0 VU (analog) with −18 dBFS (digital) (iZotope, 2023). That gives you room for peaks while keeping your average level strong.

Different plug-in developers calibrate differently, though: some expect −20 dBFS, others −12 dBFS. The point isn’t to hit an exact number — it’s to stay in a healthy range where your signal is strong, but never slammed (Develop Device Blog, 2022).

And while modern DAWs operate with 32-bit floating-point precision, giving near-infinite internal headroom, analog-modelled plug-ins can still distort internally (Sound On Sound, 2014). They emulate analog circuitry, so when you drive them too hot, you’ll still hear that “crunch.”


Why Gain Staging Still Matters in the DAW

Even with floating-point math, gain staging matters for three reasons:

  1. Consistency: Keeping tracks around the same average level means every plug-in in your chain behaves predictably. That’s not to say that every track should be around the same level at all times. You may have something that is meant to sit back in the mix, so to set it at the same level as an instrument that needs to be the focus wouldn’t make any sense. A tambourine doesn’t need to be at the same loudness as a guitar solo.
  2. Headroom: Leave space for peaks and your mix bus stays open and punchy.
  3. Clarity: Prevent unwanted saturation or “fuzz” from plug-ins that aren’t meant to distort.

Proper gain staging also makes your automation easier to control — faders respond smoothly, compressors react consistently, and your ears stay focused on balance instead of problem-solving.


Practical Steps to Dial In Clean Levels

1. Start with Track Input

Keep input levels conservative when recording — aim for peaks between −12 and −6 dBFS. This ensures no digital clipping and keeps transient detail intact. The numbers themselves aren’t as important as the outcome. Avoid being so low that you’re almost inaudible, or so high that you clip in the recording process and you’ll have something you can work with.

2. Trim Before You Process

One way you can do this is to use a trim or gain plug-in to set your average level around −18 to −12 dBFS RMS before you insert an EQ or compressor on the track. This gives most analog-modelled processors the signal level they expect. Again, this is not a rule! If you have an instrument that doesn’t need to be at -18 dBFS RMS in the mix, don’t make it that loud. As you get more experienced, you will actually start to get an idea of which instruments are too hot and which instruments need to be louder by looking at the waveform.

3. Calibrate with a VU Meter

Insert a free VU meter plug-in (like TBProAudio mvMeter2 or Klanghelm VUMT) before your first effect. Adjust the track’s gain until the VU needle hovers around 0 VU — you’re now in the sweet spot. The caveat I would put on this step is to only do this before you’ve set your overall mix balance. If you already have a good balance (for example, if the recording session nailed the levels of each instrument in the project) then I would advise against messing with individual tracks too much, because you will just be making more work for yourself later in the mixing process. I will show a good way to control your overall levels in step 5.

4. Control Each Plug-in Stage

Many plug-ins include input and output trims. Use them! If a compressor or saturator adds gain, bring the output down so the next plug-in isn’t overloaded. Even more importantly, by doing what’s called level matching, you avoid the trap of things sounding better because they’re louder. It’s a trait of the human mind to equate louder with better because, in the case of a track (let’s say a lead vocal) that you’ve compressed and added make-up gain to, the louder signal makes it stand out more. You may have done nothing noticeable with the compression, but because it’s louder, your ears are tricked into thinking it’s better. By level matching (this part of gain staging) you are able to hear the differences you’re making, not just changes in volume.

5. Leave Headroom on the Mix Bus

When all your faders are up, aim for your master bus to peak around −6 dBFS. This leaves plenty of space for mastering. If your master channel is running too hot, you can fix this in a number of ways. You can create a group containing all of the channels in the project and then drag down one fader (which will adjust all of them, as long as your group is set to control volume faders) until your master channel is in the area you require. Another way, and my preferred method, is to create a sub-mix buss at the beginning of the session and then run everything through that as a final volume control (kind of like a VCA) before the signal hits the main outputs.

✅ Keep average levels around −18 to −12 dBFS RMS
✅ Leave 6 dB or more of headroom on the mix bus
✅ Use a VU meter plug-in to visualize analog levels
✅ Trust your ears, not just the numbers


The Creative Side of Gain Staging

Here’s the fun part: once you understand the “rules,” you can break them intentionally.

Driving a tape emulation or console plug-in harder can add beautiful color and glue. Under-driving it can make a vocal sound cleaner and more open. The difference is intent. You’re no longer fighting accidental distortion — you’re choosing tone.

Gain staging isn’t about perfection—it’s about predictability. When you keep levels consistent through your mix chain, you make every compressor, EQ, and reverb behave as designed. The result? More headroom, better tone, and fewer “what just happened?” moments.
